3 Signs You’re Working Too Much

3 Signs You’re Working Too Much

Do you think you work too much? Most of us wish we would cut down our hours, but for some people work is all-consuming. It is important that your work isn’t getting you down or lowering the quality of your life – check out 3 signs that you’re working too much.

You spend a lot of your day commuting – most people average about 40 hours a week at work. If you’re commuting 2 hours a day, that adds up to 40 hours over the month – as long as a whole working week! If you have a long commute, consider working as you commute so you could leave work earlier or minimise your daily stress. However, if the commute is getting you down consider looking for work closer to home.

Your relationships with your loved ones are suffering – do you get to spend time with your friends and family? Do you see them less now than you used to? While it can be difficult on weekdays, ideally your job should leave you with two full days to socialize with the people you care about.

You’re always thinking about your work – this is a pretty big giveaway that you’re working too much. If you stress about work while you’re with your loved ones or while you’re trying to sleep, you may need to cut back your hours or think about ways you could make your job less stressful, such as hiring an assistant.

What did you think about this list? I wouldn’t say no to an extra day off now and then, but my job makes me feel happy and useful, rather than stressed and worried, which I feel very happy about! Do you like your job? Do you think you work too much? Comment and let me know!

HANDY TIPS FOR STAYING PRODUCTIVE WHEN YOU WORK FROM HOME

HANDY TIPS FOR STAYING PRODUCTIVE WHEN YOU WORK FROM HOME

Do you struggle to be productive when you work from home? As I mentioned last week, there can be many distractions when you work from home. Today I thought I would share 7 handy tips I use to make sure I stay productive when I work from home.

From investing in a good chair to eating properly, check out 7 handy tips for staying productive when you work from home.

1. Get dressed instead of staying in your pajamas all day. Getting dressed and having a shower will help you to mentally get yourself in the working zone before you start.

2. Invest in a good chair. You will be sat in the same chair for about 40 hours a week for the foreseeable future, so it is important to get one that provides back support and is adjustable.

3. Keep your work space tidy so you don’t get distracted by mess on your desk. Mess also makes it harder for you to find things you need, so it can slow you down once you’ve got started.

4. Close the door so you don’t have to listen to your family or housemates. It may feel antisocial, but listening to others talk and socialize is likely to make you want to stop working.

5. Don’t reply to texts or messages from your friends while you work. You may feel that it only takes a few seconds to reply once, but people rarely only reply once, and a conversation could ruin your productivity.

6. Make sure you eat lunch and breakfast every day. You may not feel hungry to start with, but eventually your focus will wane and you will struggle to stay on track for the rest of the day.

7. Keep working even when it is difficult. Even if you don’t feel productive and you don’t want to keep going, try to work for at least one more hour. Knowing you can finish within the hour may give you the added motivation to get through the difficult work.

4 WEIRD DISTRACTIONS YOU FACE WHEN YOU WORK FROM HOME

4 WEIRD DISTRACTIONS YOU FACE WHEN YOU WORK FROM HOME

Do you work from home? There can be many strange and surprising distractions in the home, from social media to the kitchen chairs. Sometimes it can just be too difficult to stay focused; check out four of the biggest distractions you face when you work from home.

1. Life Admin

The second you open up your laptop, you remember all of the general jobs you were putting off over the weekend. You need to email your landlord about the problem with the boiler, and you need to call your parents because it’s been over a month since you last spoke to them. You’ll just give them a quick call now, and get straight on with your work afterwards…. Oh, after you’ve given your best friend a ring. After all, it’s been two whole days since you last spoke to them.

2. The Comfort Level Of Your Chair

Or at least, the lack of comfort. The chair in the kitchen is far too hard and unforgiving to sit on for eight hours, but the chair in your bedroom is way too comfortable and squishy for you to stay focussed. You normally sit in your office chair, but that chair just started creaking loudly whenever you move.

3. The TV Show You’re Currently Watching

You’ve just started the second season of Orange Is The New Black and you’re totally hooked. After a few hours of working, your mind slips to the last episode you watched. You just need to watch one episode to see what the next part of the story will be – maybe you will watch one while you eat lunch. Just the one, of course….

4. Your Office Options

When you work from home, you can basically work wherever you want to in the house. Yes, your office is quiet and peaceful, but the kitchen is so warm and sunny in the morning. And the sofa is so comfy after a long morning sat on the uncomfortable kitchen chair – but it provides you with a whole new distraction; the TV.

What did you guys think of this post? Just so you know, I don’t normally struggle to focus on work once I’ve started, but these distractions have all tempted me at least a few times! Especially that kitchen chair. 😉

HOW TO STOP PROCRASTINATING

How To Stop Procrastinating

Do you struggle to stop procrastinating? Many people wake up hoping for a productive and focused day, but then procrastination strikes. Don’t let your days be unproductive; check out 7 ways to stop procrastinating.

1. Make a practical to-do list; instead of writing down the things you know you will get done no matter what, write a list of the jobs you don’t like doing – then set a deadline.

2. Make sure you are doing the right things; there are lots of things you can be doing, and only a few things that will NEED doing. Focus on completing the tasks that need doing first, and move on to the other, less important tasks once you’ve finished.

3. If you have a long and difficult task to complete, break it down into smaller chunks to help you feel less overwhelmed. This way, you will notice that you are accomplishing things while working on the task, which will help you to stay feeling motivated.

4. Take away temptation; remove all possible distractions before you start working. If you struggle with social media, consider downloading Cold Turkey; this app allows to temporarily block websites while you work to help you stay focused.

5. Implement consequences; think of one of your little treats, from chatting online to friends to having chocolate cake for pudding. If you don’t finish the task, take away your reward for the day to make sure you won’t do the same again the next day.

6. Reward yourself; if you finish this long project, you can treat yourself to a trip to the cinema. Rewarding good work will help you to be productive during the day – and it means you’ll have a great evening, too!

7. Tell other people about your intentions. Once other people know about your work commitments, you may feel more obliged to finish them. After all, it is pretty hard to come up with a reason for why they haven’t been finished – other than pesky procrastination! Good luck staying motivated!

What did you guys think of this post? Sometimes I can really struggle to stay motivated – you may have noticed this in my post ‘A Day In The Life Of A Freelancer’! However, these tips do help me personally to stay focused and make sure I have a productive working day. Do you have any other tips that work for you? I’d love to hear them!

Life Skills That Will Benefit You Forever Part 2

Life Skills That Will Benefit You Forever Part 2

Earlier this week we covered different life skills that make your day-to-day life and career easier, from time management to sleep management.

Today I am going to cover four different life skills that are equally as helpful – check out four life skills that will benefit you forever once you know them.

1. Being consistent – Whether you are exercising, studying, working, or spending time with your loved ones, consistency is key. Putting hard work in is not actually that hard – the hard part is doing it every day, repeatedly, until you reach success.

2. Minding your own business – Lots of people struggle to mind their own business – other people are pretty interesting, in their defense! However following other people’s journeys is a waste of your time and resources. Instead, focus on yourself and your own journey. Are you working hard? Are you achieving your goals? Are you happy?

3. Asking others for help – you cannot do everything yourself, and trying to will make you stressed out and aggravated. You may worry asking for help makes you seem incompetent or weak, but this is absolutely not the case – everyone requires help in some areas, and getting that help often creates better results.

4. Having a proactive mind-set – Your mind is the tool that lets you stay in bed all day, or get up and exercise and work. Choose to have a more proactive mind-set, and consciously push yourself forward every day. Get rid of the excuses, and instead ask yourself; why can’t you achieve something today? What is stopping you? Is that a valid reason?

What did you guys think of this post? I decided to write a follow-up post, as I think mind-set and perspective can really change the way we live our lives. If you can think of any other life skills that you think are really useful, comment your ideas below and let me know! 🙂
