FOUR WAYS TO BECOME MORE EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT

Do you think you have high levels of emotional intelligence? People who are very emotionally intelligent tend to make better leaders and friends, and they are often generally better with people than others with low emotional intelligence.

Check out 4 ways you can become more emotionally intelligent.

1. Respond Instead Of Reacting

There is an important difference between responding and reacting. When you react, you emotionally respond without thinking to what the person you are talking to has said. This can mean you become irritated, you interrupt someone, or you could react incorrectly.

Instead, try to respond. When you respond, you make sure you are aware of how both people feel, and you make a conscious decision on how you want to react. This shows you are more aware of other people and their opinions and feelings, rather than just immediately emotionally reacting.

2. Listen More Than You Speak

If you talk more than you speak, the person you are talking to has no choice but to do most of the listening. A lot of the time, the nicest thing someone can do is just listen to what the other person is saying without interrupting them or tuning out. It makes the other person feel valued, rather than insignificant.

3. Apologize If You Are At Fault

If you need to apologize, it means you have already upset someone or let them down. Don’t worry too much about that – everyone makes mistakes. The most important thing now is to make sure you apologize properly to the person you have upset. They deserve a real apology, and they are more likely to trust, respect and like you for properly acknowledging their feelings.

4. Look At Life With Different Perspectives

When you put yourself in someone else’s shoes, it makes it easier for you to understand their feelings and opinions. Everyone’s feelings are equally as important as yours, and it is important to be sensitive to the needs of the people in your life.
